Afield Notes is taking off
Musings, commentary, goings-ons and Afield events
I’ve been thinking (and talking) about starting a Substack for ages. I even posted on IG this summer that it would launch in September. Alas, that didn’t happen—but here we are. Like most people, I’m intimidated by the blank page and the prospect of beginning something new.
So why Substack? Honestly, Instagram has started to feel a bit tired to me—and dare I say, cringe (a Gen Z idiom I adore and, quite frankly, find very Gen X). As someone with a visual sensibility, I naturally gravitate toward IG, but lately I’ve found myself flustered by what to post. Do I want to be real or aspirational? Can I share pretty pictures when my personal life feels like a mess? To filter or not to filter? Intentionally perfect or intentionally dingy? Food pics? (Absolutely not. Not anymore. Though I did recently break my own rule with a photo of the most perfect tartare at The Four Horsemen.)
Mostly, I want to write more than an Instagram caption allows—and to write about all kinds of things. I have a lot on my mind these days, and this seems like the right place to let some of it out.
Welcome, dear future readers.
So what is Afield Notes?
You’ll find personal musings, the occasional essay, bits of what’s happening around town, and exclusive notifications about Afield events. And while Afield has always been centered on in-person community, I’m also looking forward to building an active chat space here.
I want to hear from you — what you’re reading, what you’re thinking, what you agree or disagree with, and the events or ideas you think we should know about. All of it!
